Steamed Mackerel with salted lemon

My favorite childhood dish, steamed mackerel with salted lemon. It very easy to make. Sometimes, fish can smell very fishy. To lift up the fish flavor, ginger and lemon are common ingredients to neutralize the fishy smell and taste. One of the classic way to steam fish, is to steam the fish with some ginger and finish the steamed fished with cilantro garnish and adding light soy sauce and garlic oil.

  • 1 bunch cilantro
  • 3 slices ginger
  • 3 tbsp light soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 glove garlic

Clean the mackerel and make some cuts into the fish, so the fish can cook evenly and for the salted lemon. Cut the salted lemon in half and slice. Stuff the fish with the sliced lemon and put the ginger in the belly. Let it marinate for at least 30 minutes in the fridge. Before steaming, take the fish out of the fridge and let it rest 15 minutes. Steam the fish proximately 15 minutes, it depends on the size of the fish.

Heat a pan and add the vegetable oil and garlic to make garlic oil. Take the fish out of the steaming pan and remove the steam water. Next, garnish the fish with some chopped cilantro. Finally, add the light soy sauce and garlic oil.
